From the President's Perspective

Corned Beef and Corn Tortillas?.... As peculiar as it sounds, St. Patrick's Day was HUGE when I was growing up in South Texas. In an area of the country that boasts close to a 96% Latino population and where the variety of mom and pop (or mama and papa!)Tex-Mex restaurants are as numerous as the number of Starbucks in Houston (i.e., if one closes, just cross the street and walk into another one), "Erin Go Braugh!" was the official motto on March 17 in Brownsville, preceded only by "Don't Mess With Texas" - a literal blending of the two cultures into one. Men wore green guayaberas to work rather than be pinched by their co-workers, the Sisters of the Holy Ghost, who came from Ireland to Brownsville to start my grammar school, always showed The Bells of St. Mary's , joining in the chorus of "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ra" just before teaching Spanish, and the ladies in our cafeteria served corned beef in, you guessed it, corn tortillas (and yes - they were as terrible as they sound!). It was an odd conjunction of customs and yet there was definitely something curiously liberating and even hopeful about seemingly different populations coming together for a common celebratory cause.

Rising Seniors Look to College
On the evening of February 22nd, College Counselor Joseph Miller and the faculty and administration of Cristo Rey Jesuit hosted its first-ever college night for parents. Mr. Miller led the challenge of introducing junior parents to the road ahead.....the road to college. Attendance was great and the parents appreciated the overview and timeline. For many Cristo Rey Jesuit families, this was the first step in building an understanding of the process and how the school will support them through the journey.
