The Friends of the Houston Public Library (FoHPL) hosted the first of its kind Literacy Day/Free Book Fair here at Cristo Rey Jesuit!
Thousands of books in English and Spanish were provided free of charge to Cristo Rey Jesuit students, their siblings and families, and various community service groups in the neighborhood surrounding the school.
The March 11th event included a celebrity book reading by Minerva Perez of Latina Voices and a raffle for a signed jersey donated by the Houston Dynamo.
“This is something we’ve never done before,” said FoHPL board vice chair Paul Chapman. “We are thrilled to work with Cristo Rey Jesuit to further our mission of supporting the fantastic Houston Public Library System we have in the city, while promoting literacy in our community. We hope it is the first of many.”
In addition to the donation of the books and jersey, several corporate sponsors are making it possible for FoHPL to donate the books.
“This is a great thing, not just for our students and their families, but for our neighbors like Mt. Carmel Elementary and YWCA,” President Paul Posoli added. “This generous donation includes books in English, Spanish, and current titles. We are very grateful.”
