When the Cristo Rey Jesuit boys baseball team hit the field for its first game of the season, each team member wore a special jersey designed as a tribute to our school’s Founding President, Father TJ Martinez, SJ. The right sleeve of the jersey features Father TJ’s trademark signature and carries the number 14, noting the year that Father Martinez passed away. That number will also be retired from circulation.
Cristo Rey Jesuit History teacher and baseball coach Andy Straube was very passionate about the idea.
Five years ago when I first interviewed here, Father Martinez asked me about my ambitions at Cristo Rey Jesuit. I said that I wanted to teach history and start a baseball program to which he responded, “What can I do to help?”. Without him, we wouldn’t have the program here today and it is for this reason that we retire the number
