Houston Grand Opera singer Ana Maria Martinez entertained some of our students with her mesmerizing voice and also enlightened them with invaluable advice. “We are all blessed with many gifts. Find what helps you become your best self.” Hosted by teacher Kim Anderson, Martinez talked to the student audience about how she became a world renowned opera singer and what life lessons she learned along the way. “If you dream it, and apply yourself, you can achieve it.”
Educated at Juilliard, Martinez often takes on roles of women 20+ years younger, mimicking their mannerisms to become the person she’s playing.
When you attend an opera “you enter a different world,” she said. “Your imagination takes off. It give you a way to connect with others.” The characters on stage are “an instrument through which light and love come.”
