As scholarships are being awarded this spring semester, one scholarship has roots at Cristo Rey Jesuit. The Mary Ann Wallace Scholarship was recently awarded for the ninth time to a Cristo Rey Jesuit senior based on GPA, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and the student’s response to an essay titled “What has your time at Cristo Rey Jesuit meant to you?”
Senior Raquel M. was pleasantly surprised when the Executive Director of the scholarship committee, Aileen McCormick, walked into Raquel’s class and announced she was the recipient and how impressed she was with her essay. Raquel plans to use the scholarship in pursuit of a civil engineering degree at the University of Houston.
“I’m so incredibly grateful and honored,” Raquel said. “This means so much to me. Thank you.”
“You are a great example of what Cristo Rey Jesuit can do for young people,” said McCormick, who was Mary Ann Wallace’s cousin. Mary Ann Wallace, a woman of deep faith, had been an educator for 39 years. “Each year, I’m impressed by Cristo Rey Jesuit student essays, which provide some insight into graduating seniors with respect to how they feel about their education and formation they received from Cristo Rey Jesuit, as well as the impact the school’s Corporate Work-Study Program has had on them.”
