Department Chair of College Readiness & Senior College Readiness Teacher

Job Summary:

Cristo Rey Jesuit is an apostolic work of the Society of Jesus serving the Catholic Church's mission of education in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The school opened its doors in August 2009, it now has student enrollment of 500 young men and women. Sponsored by the Jesuits of the USA Central and Southern Province, Cristo Rey Jesuit offers a rigorous college preparatory education available to students of limited economic resources in the Houston area. A unique Corporate Work Study Program places students in Houston businesses and non-profits where they learn the expectations of the corporate world and earn up to 50 percent of the cost of their education. Cristo Rey Jesuit belongs to the national Cristo Rey Network of schools and the national Jesuit Schools Network.

This is a dual role. The Cristo Rey Jesuit Department Chair of College Readiness is responsible for coaching and leading the teachers in the College Readiness department in effectively developing and implementing the 9th-12th grade college readiness curriculum and instructional practices that result in students’ exceptional college-ready and lifelong learning skills.

As the Senior College Readiness Teacher, the primary responsibility is being the instructional leader for the Senior College Readiness course by planning, teaching, grading, and communicating with parents. The Department Chair and Senior College Readiness teacher will work in close collaboration with the College Counselors to support seniors through the college admissions, financial aid, scholarship, and college selection processes, and to stay abreast of updates in the admissions field that need to filter down into the 9th-11th grade college readiness classes.

It is the ultimate goal of the college counseling department at Cristo Rey Jesuit, through guidance and education, to ensure that all graduates have the ability to maintain success in the academic, professional and personal lives on their journey to and through college. Both the Cristo Rey Jesuit mission statement and that of the Cristo Rey Network guide the work of the school, including the College Counseling Office.

Primary Responsibilities:

Senior College Readiness Teacher -

  • Lesson plan, teach, grade, and communicate with parents for Senior College Readiness classes in close coordination with the College Counselors.
  • Create unit/individual lesson plans through a culturally relevant lens for predominantly first-generation, ethnic, low-income students.
  • Build rapport and work closely with College Counselors, Alumni Advisors, grade level and content area faculty.
  • Actively participate in weekly college counseling planning meetings
  • Build rapport and trust with predominantly first-generation, low-income students and their parents.
  • Help students set and achieve their goals through consistent feedback.
  • Educate families about college search and application, college admissions application, financial aid application, scholarship applications, selecting best fit college, and matriculation possibilities.
  • Support college visits to campus and college fairs.
  • Support college field lessons/ tours.
  • Write recommendation letters for seniors as needed.
  • Attend in person and/or virtual professional development, including Cristo Rey Jesuit PD, Cristo Rey Network opportunities, and webinars/conferences by partner organizations such as College Board, TACAC, NACAC, etc.
  • Help coordinate SAT, PSAT, AP exams.
  • Assist Dean of College Counseling with projects and duties as assigned.
  • Actively participate in teacher duties
  • Support school-wide efforts as needed

College Readiness Department Chair -

  • Observe, coach and evaluate College Readiness teachers in instructional practices
  • Hold department teachers accountable for assigned responsibilities and duties
  • Lead department meetings
  • Oversee development, alignment, and implementation of 9th-12th grade college readiness curriculum
  • Manage Discover U Coordinator
  • Assist Dean of College Counseling with projects and duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:

Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding and application of trauma-informed practices related to student need in and out of the classroom.
  • High quality and student-centered curriculum design driven by content and college readiness standards.
  • Teaching practices that support youth from challenging circumstances and educational experiences - including but not limited to inconsistent access to education - that result in learning gaps. Adult learning theory that fosters ownership and collaboration. Highly skilled in classroom management, unit/lesson planning, instructional practices, including differentiated instruction, scaffolding.
  • Impact of adolescent development on curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Effective pedagogical practices specifically related to Ignatian pedagogy, literacy development, student engagement, student-centered practices, constructivism, and cultural relevance.
  • Elements of high functioning learning cultures.
  • Current brain research and its impact on teaching and learning.
  • Student data analysis: formative, summative, and schoolwide, including examining students through the use of protocols; ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Openness to continuing developing knowledge and skills related to educational leadership and educational research and practice
  • Ability to closely and effectively collaborate with a team to achieve high-impact results
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with faculty, families, students, college representatives, and corporate leaders
  • Strong communication skills

Educational and Experience Requirements:

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four year educational institution, a Master’s Degree is preferred but not required. Fluency in Spanish is required.

Experience

  • 3-5 years teaching experience with predominantly first-generation, low income students
  • Instructional leadership experience
  • Prior experience working with high school students/families and college counseling/or college admissions.
  • Supervising and management experience
  • Strong working knowledge in all Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Naviance is a plus
